“Peeps was set up by my husband, Steve and I in 2018 after we found ourselves in the world of HIE. Our daughter, Heidi stopped breathing shortly after her birth, during skin-to-skin – we didn’t know the cause at the time but were later given a HIE diagnosis, which is an event that can cause injury to the brain due to a lack of of oxygen. We had never heard of HIE, and during this scary time, we found ourselves in an unknown world without any information or support about what was happening and what was to come. We had to actively search out information on the internet and through support groups to help us understand the world that we were now inhabiting.
We wanted to ensure other families got the necessary information and support we didn’t from the very early days in hospital and then through their HIE journey so we set up Peeps to provide this support.
The name Peeps HIE came from our friends, who affectionally call Heidi, “Heidi-Peeps”.”
“We provide free parent packs to all neonatal intensive care units across the UK to provide to families whose babies have experienced HIE . These packs provide access to information and support from the earliest possible opportunity, and a few items that offer a little comfort during the early weeks and months ahead.
We also offer peer / buddy support from someone who has been through a similar experience. We can also support through counselling and funding for equipment.”
As well as supporting those touched by HIE, we are also working with other individuals and organisations, to take part in research relating to HIE, and represent those with lived experience. We are part of the NHS Resolution Early Notification Maternity Voices Advisory Group, and along with BabyLifeline, Campaign for Safer Births and AvMA.”
Sarah set up Peeps HIE in 2018. The charity has successfully supported many families through a traumatic period in the lives giving key information and guidance when it is needed most.
