We were honoured to be invited to attend the first Black Maternal Health Conference 2023 hosted by Sandra Igwe founder of The Motherhood Group.
Sandra founded The Motherhood Group in 2016 following the traumatic birth of her daughter, Zoe Igwe, with the aim of supporting other Black women throughout their maternal experience. The Motherhood Group provide safe spaces for black mothers to share their experiences through trusted community-based events and workshops, and peer to peer support.
They coordinate the annual Black Maternal Mental Health Week UK which aims to raise awareness of the health disparities around black mothers’ mental health, to advocate for women and encourage them to ask for help. They also provide training to health care providers in providing individualised and culturally sensitive care to black mothers when supporting them through their pregnancy and beyond, with the aim of improving health outcomes for black women and their babies.
The conference highlighted the disparities black and ethnic minority women face when accessing maternity care and the urgent need to dismantle systemic racism and unconscious bias within the maternity sector to improve pregnancy outcomes for black women and their babies. The focus was on bridging the gap between community, service providers and industries to improve the black maternal experience.
We heard from key voices within the sector including the keynote speakers Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent OBE, Chief Midwifery Officer for England, and MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy. It was an interactive event with questions from the audience encouraged and engaging panel discussions.
When asked about the event Rebecca has this to say:
"It was a pleasure to listen to and learn from such inspirational, passionate and informative guest speakers and panels. It was also a privilege to hear the guest speakers share their own often traumatic experiences and to witness their dedication to ensuring that no other Black woman has the same experience ."
