Having time as a family, and a break from the challenges of everyday life is vital. However, we understand that it can be difficult to organise an accessible holiday as a family with a disabled child, especially abroad, when you need to ensure that you have all of the right equipment available.

An increasing number of hotels are becoming accessible to disabled people, and some theme parks and attractions offer a “quiet hour”. There are also options for activity and respite holidays.

Choosing a holiday or activity can be difficult, so we have put together a list of options in the UK and abroad to get you started:

  • Enable Holidays specialise in providing accessible tailor made holidays abroad with over 50 destinations including city breaks, beach holidays, villas, tours and no-fly options.
  • Center Parcs provide accessible breaks and disabled lodge accommodation within a holiday park, with many accessible indoor and outdoor activities like bowling and archery
  • Calvert Trust provide accessible adventure breaks in Kielder, the Lake District and Exmoor. There is a full programme of accessible activities including horse riding, climbing and canoeing, accessible accommodation and experienced staff.
  • Disability Snow Sport operate ski schools at various locations throughout the UK as well as delivering opportunities to ski and snowboard in a mountain environment worldwide
  • Surfability UK provides adaptive surfing lessons in South Wales for people with additional needs due to disability, illness, injury or learning difficulties.

Holiday and travel as part of a compensation claim

As part of a claim for compensation, we can claim the additional costs of a supported family holiday both in the UK and abroad. We will ensure that you have the funding for an assistive holiday to hire suitable adapted accommodation and equipment. We can also claim the cost of taking your child’s carers with you, so that you are able to enjoy time as a family rather than having to be a carer on holiday.

Sometimes, it is also possible to buy an adapted holiday home, motorhome or caravan, if that would make holidaying easier and your family would prefer having a home from home, with familiarity and routine, for a holiday rather than travelling to different places.

Here are some of our families explaining how they have used their compensation allow them to go on accessible holidays.

“DL loved the lodge on first sight and said “ I feel like I belong here”. We have watched him bounce back to his usual happy, easy going, funny self but with extras……his confidence has grown and he has been able to be more independent in a place that he feels safe. He shocked us by stating he was going to get himself a job helping on the site and he has done just that!

He has made a great relationship with the chap who does the gate security and every morning he would drive his wheelchair independently to the gate and help check in the day visitors for the water activities. What a laugh when he returned one day and said “is it too much to ask for a pot noodle? I have been working you know”.

DL has wormed his way into lots of hearts and it is fantastic to see him interacting with people independent of us. He has enjoyed boating, swimming and taking his dogs out, he will involve himself in anything that is going on or he will choose to sit people watching from the lodge and commentate on what they are up to……no TV required!

DL loves people and having the lodge has allowed him to have lots of visitors in an open space over the summer, he caught up with everyone he had been missing. Now he is back at college he cannot wait for the weekend to get back to the lodge and “work” and circulate. I think we are very fortunate to have found this place for DL and I would recommend a lodge/caravan to anyone who has a child or young adult who cannot be fully independent. It is a place to go that offers everyone a bit of down time and removes the stress of trying to find appropriate/ accessible holidays. DL is living his best life and it’s heart-warming.”

I cannot begin to tell you how this little place of magic has enhanced DL’s life. DL has been depressed due to the isolation brought about by COVID and as a family we were dreading the thought of a ten week summer break from college and the possible further detrimental impact on his mental health, but then we found “DL’s Lodge” and I think I can speak for us all in saying we’ve probably had the best summer ever!
