Life after a claim
Making sure support lasts for as long as it’s needed
A settlement isn’t always the end of your journey. For many of our clients, it’s the start of the next chapter.
Compensation provides more than just money. It helps make sure you have everything you need, from home adaptations and equipment to therapy and the everyday support that make a genuinely different life possible.

Understanding the difference
Understanding general and special damages
Compensation for medical negligence or serious injury is usually made up of two parts. General damages cover what it’s cost you as a person — the pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment your injury has caused. Special damages cover the financial side from the money already lost, to the funds you’ll need in future for things like care, therapy, equipment, and home adaptations.
Understanding the difference between general and special damages can help make sense of a settlement figure, because most of what actually changes your day-to-day life comes from special damages, not the headline number alone. We’ll always take the time to walk you through exactly what yours means, so it feels like a workable plan for your future — and not just a number on a page.

How can compensation be used?
Every family’s needs are different, but here’s a closer look at some of the most common ways compensation can change lives.
Managing money, for the long term
Significant settlements need careful, long-term management, whether that’s through a deputyship, a trust, or both working together. We help make sure your compensation is managed properly and grows appropriately, for as long as it’s needed — not just in the few years right after a claim.
Assistive technology and equipment
From off-road wheelchairs and mobility equipment to communication aids and sensory equipment, we make sure the right technology is funded and properly in place. This is often not just one-off sourcing for the short-term, but also as your needs change and develop over the years ahead.
Long-term education and EHCP
Compensation can be used to fund things like one-to-one teaching assistants, specialist equipment to help with education, or a placement at a school that’s genuinely the right fit for your child. We can also provide support when you want to challenge an EHCP that isn’t meeting your child’s needs properly.
Rehabilitation and therapy
The right rehabilitation can make a genuine difference to daily life: from physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to speech and language therapy and psychological support. We make sure your recovery is properly funded, and often start the process long before a claim has even fully settled.
Home and car adaptations
Compensation can change daily life quickly and practically. Whether that means moving to a more suitable home, adapting the one you’re already in, or arranging a specially adapted vehicle, we can work toward ensuring this happens right from the start.
Accessible holidays and activities
Life after a claim isn’t only about coping with setbacks. Our clients have used compensation for adapted holiday accommodation, motor homes, adventure and riding activities, and even a wheelchair-adapted tree house. Although relatively small things, they can bring huge pleasure.
Living Her Dream
Elan’s story
After a failure to properly monitor her during labour left Elan with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) and cerebral palsy, we secured an early interim payment to help her family move into a suitable new home. We secured a hydrotherapy pool and put the right support and equipment in place for her to flourish. Elan is now working towards her dream of becoming a dressage Paralympian.
Case management in action
Noel’s Story
When Noel was seriously injured in a motorbike crash, a case manager was appointed just weeks afterwards. They brought together his private rehabilitation at a specialist hospital with his NHS care, coordinating everything from hydrotherapy to the home adaptations that let him return to the activities he loved, including horse riding and skiing.

One person, coordinating everything
The role of a case manager
Serious injuries often require support from a team of specialists. These include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, care workers, and equipment suppliers, sometimes across both NHS and private care at once.
A case manager is the single point of contact who brings all of this together: building a care plan, coordinating appointments, sourcing the right professionals and equipment, and adjusting everything as needs change over time. For many families, having one person to call, rather than juggling a dozen different services alone, is one of the most valuable parts of the support a claim can provide.

Organisations who understand
Working with charities who can support you
We work closely with charities who understand exactly what our clients are going through. Several of our own partners are trustees at Headway branches, and we’ve fundraised and funded specialist training for organisations like Brainwave. For us, that’s what genuine support looks like, covering the personal, as well as the professional.
