Peter’s life was forever changed when a seemingly simple perianal abscess, left untreated, developed into life-threatening necrotising fasciitis of the abdomen, demonstrating the devastating consequences when bacterial infections are not promptly treated.
Peter’s Life Before Experiencing Medical Negligence
At the age of 35, Peter lost his vision as a result of a genetic disorder. Despite his blindness, he led an active and full life. He raised two children with his wife, Kathleen, fundraised over £250,000 for blindness and disability charities, and with the assistance of a guide dog, enjoyed socialising with friends, blind bowling, and going to the rugby.
The Beginning: Perianal Abscess Left Untreated
In February 2020, now aged 74, he began experiencing symptoms of a perianal abscess. He was admitted to hospital for treatment but what began as an easily treatable infection quickly developed into necrotising fasciitis of the abdomen. This severe, life-threatening soft tissue infection was caused by the delay in treatment.
What Happens If You Leave a Bacterial Infection Untreated? Peter’s Experience
When Peter was admitted to hospital he was told that he would need surgery to drain the abscess. Despite the urgent need for surgical intervention, Peter was left in agony and not operated on for over 50 hours. This delay in treating his bacterial infection would prove catastrophic.
Progression from Untreated Perianal Abscess to Necrotising Fasciitis of the Abdomen
By the time Peter was taken to theatre, the bacterial infection, left untreated for such a long time, had developed into necrotising fasciitis, which had spread throughout his abdomen. Due to the extent of the necrotising fasciitis in his abdomen — and the threat to Peter’s life — the surgeon had no choice but to remove part of his bowel and form a permanent stoma.
The surgery lasted for over five hours, Peter was placed in an induced coma, and then admitted to the intensive care unit. Kathleen was told that the doctors didn’t expect him to pull through.
The Devastating Consequences of Bacterial Infection Left Untreated
Multiple Emergency Surgeries Required
Over the following days, Peter underwent five further operations to remove the infection and required extensive rehabilitation for a further three months. Covid hit while Peter was admitted to hospital, so he was unable to see his family, which had a huge effect on his mental health.
Loss of Independence and Mobility
Peter’s guide dog was also re-homed whilst he was in hospital, as the injuries he had sustained had affected both his mobility and capacity to care for a guide dog. This was a devastating blow for Peter, as it meant a serious loss of his previous independence.
Peter was eventually discharged into the care of Kathleen and district nurses, but his whole life had changed. His mobility was reduced due to the amount of muscle and tissue loss from the necrotising fasciitis of his abdomen, and his independence had been taken away. He was also unable to manage his stoma due to his blindness.
