Joining forces with Harry’s Pals to support parents

Receiving the news that your child has a life limiting or life changing illness or disability is devastating for any parent, and they often need psychological and emotional support to give them strength and resilience for the challenges that may lie ahead. We are proud to partner with Harry’s Pals in their aim to provide therapy, counselling and short breaks to all those parents that need it.

We spoke to Harry’s mum and the founder of the charity Hayley Charlesworth about why she set up the charity.

“When Harry was born in 2015, we had no idea that our lives would be flipped upside down; it was only when he started to have seizures the day after he was born that we realised there was something terribly wrong. Eventually after a multitude of tests we were given the devastating news that our son would need care for the rest of his life due to the level of brain damage identified during an MRI scan.

I remember asking the consultant delivering the news “will we be allocated any emotional support” – to which the answer was no sorry, it’s not something parents are offered.

Over the years, I have given this much thought and have reflected on the detrimental impact that this lack of support had on us during such a harrowing time. I also heard from and read about countless other families who have suffered heartbreaking consequences as a result of a lack of emotional support.

Therefore, I decided to launch Harry’s Pals to provide families of severely ill or disabled children (diagnosed in the past five years) across the country with the emotional support that they desperately need. At Harry’s Pals we focus our efforts on providing families with professional counselling and therapy sessions, which are bespoke to meet their needs. We offer short breaks away, so that families/couples can get some much-needed time out and the opportunity to make precious memories. We also use our experiences to try and inspire change to improve services and support for disabled people and their carers.”
